I suspect this is all hype and nonsense and picking out the use of a slaughter knife is absurd if animal cruelty is really the issue. The cruelty for the animals is being transported away from their dwelling/security, and being in a strange and traumatic place at slaughter time. Killing with a gun or slaughter knife is immaterial, after that. I was with an Aussie farmer who had to euthanase an injured sheep in a remote paddock with a knife, and he showed me there are nerves in the neck that are severed immediately which cause the animal to black out. Even assuming the animal is cognitive after that point, the first impulse of the brain during trauma is to release a flood of adrenaline AND endorphins which induce a sense of wellbeing for fight/flight and act as a pain-blocker (eg gunshot wound victims take at least 60 seconds to feel any pain). I'm much more comfortable with home slaughter of an animal with a knife, usually after it's been lured with a bucket of treats and that is it's last memory! than a gunshot to the head after transporting it to an abattoir!

At the same time, Vegemite's label has changed in recent months to include halal certification. Muslim leaders have congratulated Kraft for introducing the labels. But since the labels were changed in August, Kraft's head office has received regular phone calls from people complaining about the halal labelling on Vegemite. Vegemite has been certified kosher for more than a decade. An Australian subject that will keep the press busy for the years to come.
