Agri Star Meat and Poultry CEO Hersey Friedman says his company is giving a donation to the Postville Response Coalition for rental housing assistance.

The company’s donation will cover the cost of renting five apartments or houses for three months.

Officials say the fire started around 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Postville Bakery and Restaurant. The blaze displaced 18 residents.

Friedman said Tuesday some of those left homeless by the fire worked for Agri Star. He said that had little to do with his company’s action.

The Rev. Steve Brackett of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church says the American Red Cross of the Tri-States also is assisting the victims, and a number of Postville residents have donated items.
